Teacher, 28, dies of Covid-19 as US schools prepare for return to classrooms
* Demetria Bannister taught elementary school in South Carolina * New York City to resume in-person classes in 11 daysA 28-year-old elementary school teacher in Columbia, South Carolina, died this week from complications due to Covid-19, authorities have said.Demetria "Demi" Bannister, who taught third grade at Windsor elementary school, died on Monday."With heavy hearts … administrators share this information with permission from Ms Bannister's parents who wish to remind others about the seriousness of this disease caused by the coronavirus," Libby Roof, a spokeswoman for Richland county school district two, said in a statement to the Guardian.The last time Bannister went to Windsor Elementary was on 28 August. This date marked the last workday for instructors before school started. She started the school year teaching her students virtually, from home.School district officials said they found out that Bannister had tested positive for Covid-19 on 4 September. They subsequently conducted contact tracing and notification, the State newspaper reported. It is unclear where Bannister contracted Covid-19.The school district is all virtual so there was no close contact with students, Roof said. Following contact tracing, three employees were put in quarantine. Roof said she did not have information on their health conditions "as that is private medical information".In addition to her teaching duties, Bannister was a leader of the student choir and organized a club for aspiring singers, the newspaper said. Comments on a memorial web page described Bannister as kind and happy."Ms Bannister was my teacher and she was my favorite teacher. I wish I was still at elementary school to say my goodbyes. My heart goes out to the family. Her grandmother is all I have left of her and Ms Bannister," one commenter said.Another wrote: "Demi and I were sorority sisters. We became friends years ago at a sorority convention where (of course) she used her incredible Disney princess voice to bring people together." A parent of Bannister's former elementary school classmates remarked: "She was always such a sweet and happy girl."Bannister's death comes as the nation's parents and educators continue to struggle with safety concerns over school reopenings. The Washington Post reported that at least five other teachers have died from Covid-19 since August. Although it is not known whether any of them contracted coronavirus at school, their deaths have intensified concerns about whether campus environments will prompt outbreaks.In New York City, which has the largest US public school district, one teacher and one school employee have tested positive 11 days before in-person classes resume, according to NBC New York.While efforts to stave off outbreaks are in place, such as masks and testing, Mayor Bill de Blasio reportedly commented that "of course" there would be coronavirus clusters when classes begin. Some educators fear that preventive efforts will not be enough, with one commenting to Gothamist that the schools department "is using us as science experiments".Meanwhile, the issue of school reopening continues to be heavily politicized across the US.The president and the education secretary, Betsy DeVos, previously told public school districts that federal money would be withheld if they did not fully reopen for the 2020-21 school year.Neither Trump nor DeVos has unilateral control over federal school funding. They also lack the power to force schools to open at a certain time or particular way, the Washington Post reported.Trump continues to dangle money in the discussion of school reopening, however, saying in a tweet on Thursday: "Democrats, OPEN THE SCHOOLS ( SAFELY), NOW! When schools are closed, let the money follow the child (FAMILY). Why should schools be paid when they are closed? They shouldn't!"

University of Michigan Dearborn Holds Whites-Only Virtual 'Cafe' Event
The University of Michigan Dearborn hosted a virtual discussion Tuesday that it dubbed the "non-POC cafe," an event that appeared to welcome only white students and ignited criticism of the school for its decision to hold an apparently segregated event.The Dearborn campus, one of the public university's two regional campuses, described the virtual event as "a space for students that do not identify as persons of color to gather and to discuss their experience as students on campus and as non-POC in the world."The university also held another event for students of color, named the "BIPOC Cafe," using the acronym that stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.The virtual discussion for students of color was described similarly, as "a space for student[s] from marginalized racial/ethnic/cultural communities to gather and to relate with one another and to discuss their experience as students on campus and as people of color in the world."The events, which occurred simultaneously at 2:00pm on Tuesday, were hosted on Zoom by UM Dearborn's Center for Social Justice and Inclusion. They were scheduled to be held "bi-monthly, generally to occur on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 2:00pm and the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7:00pm." with dates and times "subject to change depending on feedback and demand."The university has since apologized for the manner in which the events were described and promoted by the school and said that both events were open to all members of the UM Dearborn campus community and "were never intended to be exclusive or exclusionary for individuals of a certain race.""University of Michigan-Dearborn sincerely regrets the terms used to describe the 'cafe' events. The terms used to describe these virtual events and the descriptions themselves were not clear and not reflective of the university's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion," Beth Marmarelli, director of communications and marketing for UM Dearborn, said in a statement to National Review.The events were intended "to allow students the opportunity to connect to process current events, share their experiences related to race, share knowledge and resources and brainstorm solutions," Marmarelli said. "The original intent was to provide students from marginalized communities a space that allowed for them to exist freely without having to normalize their lives and experiences, while also providing students that do not identify as persons of color the opportunity to deepen their understanding of race and racism without harming or relying on students of color to educate them."

Top Medicaid official racked up $3.5 million in consulting charges — and billed it all to taxpayers
The person in charge of providing health care for low-income Americans spent several million dollars of taxpayer money on furthering her own career, a congressional investigation has found.Seema Verma, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and a member of the coronavirus task force, racked up $3.5 million in consulting charges, event costs, and other things that developed her connections within the Republican party, Politico reports via the investigation set to be published Thursday. That included nearly $3,000 on a "Girl's Night" party, about $1,000 to place an op-ed with Fox News, and dozens more line items before Verma was cut off last year.Politico first reported Verma's excessive spending in March 2019, and her contracts with the consulting firm Nahigian Strategies were soon cut off. But Politico also sparked a congressional probe into those contracts, and investigators sifted through thousands of pages of Verma's emails and billing records. They found that Verma spent more than $3 million over two years in the Trump administration on "handpicked communications consultants used to promote Administrator Verma's public profile and personal brand," congressional Democrats said in a Thursday statement.Among the charges, investigators found Verma spent $115,000 with one consultant who "tried to broker conversations between Verma and well-known Washington reporters," booked conservative media appearances, and even tried to connect her with then-White House communications director Bill Shine, Politico writes. Verma also diverted $13,856 to shoot an "eMedicare" video, including $450 for a makeup artist, and spent at least $3,400 in consulting charges to arrange an appearance on Politico's Women Rule podcast, among many other charges.
- распыление полимерной порошковой краски;
- декорирование и ламинирование;
- прессованные;

Outcry in Pakistan as police blame woman who was gang raped for driving at night
The gang rape of a stranded woman motorist in front of her children has caused outcry in Pakistan with calls for the public hanging of the culprits. Anger over the attack on a woman who had broken down on a motorway outside Lahore was then increased after a senior police officer appeared to blame the victim for her choice of route. Police on Thursday said they had arrested 12 suspects for questioning during an extensive manhunt. The woman with her two children was driving to Gujranwala when she was forced to stop at the Gujjarpura section of the motorway after her car ran out of fuel at around 1:30am. She called relatives for help, but before they could arrive, two robbers approached the car, smashed the windows and dragged her and her children from the vehicle. The attackers also took jewellery, bank cards and £466 in cash. A senior Lahore police officer later provoked further condemnation when he appeared to blame the victim. Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh questioned why the woman had taken that route and why she had not checked her fuel tank. His comments were condemned by Shireen Mazari, the human rights minister. "For an officer to effectively blame a woman for being gang raped by saying she should have taken the Grand Trunk Road, or question as to why she went out in the night with her children is unacceptable and I have taken up this issue," she said. "Nothing can ever rationalise the crime of rape. That's it." Inspector-General of Punjab Police Inam Ghani claimed that by Thursday night officers had identified the culprits' village. Opposition leaders quickly attacked what they said was the government's breakdown in law and order. "This is a matter of national embarrassment and evidence of a completely broken down legal system," said Shehbaz Sharif, opposition leader in the national assembly. Gang rape is rare in Pakistan, although sexual harassment and violence against women is not uncommon. Nearly 1,000 women are killed in Pakistan each year in so-called "honour killings" for allegedly violating conservative norms on love and marriage.
